I recently watched the documentary “The A.I. Doc…..Or how I became an apocaloptimist”.  It is both an entertaining, yet chilling deep dive into the effectively out of control race to dominance in the world of artificial intelligence.  The creator, Daniel Roher is a filmmaker and soon to be father who is concerned with what the world will look like for his child in light of the rapid advances in artificial intelligence.

So over a year, he interviews dozens of experts on the cutting edge of this phenomenon including CEO’s of some of the biggest names in the business such as Nvidia and OpenAI.  While some offer very dark, draconian forecasts for humanity, others are very excited about what AI may bring about.  For me, however, I see the dark side of the technology and how it could drastically upend our normal way of life.  All of those interviewed agreed that the pace at which the technology is evolving far exceeds government’s ability to regulate it.  On top of that, it is all basically in the hands of private corporations (or in the case of China, Russia and North Korea, in the hands of their governments), and the race is on for one of these to become the dominant player.  As a result, some are willing to take shortcuts and abuse their power.  Sound familiar?

Effectivelly, “The cat’s out of the bag.” or “The genie is out of the bottle.”, and we will never live in a world without this rapid advance as computer software takes over myriad careers and eventually becomes self-aware.  Sounds like science fiction, but nope.  Watch the video and you’ll hear examples from today as to how AI is starting to catch on that it is smarter than you and I.
