In yet another acknowledgement of the possibility of a cyber-attack on our nation’s power grid, the Pentagon recently announced it is planning for such. The Rapid Attack Detection, Isolation, Characterization (RADICS) plan is to identify threats and respond quickly to any attack of this sort. As with most government programs, we can expect delays in its implementation, however, this shows the seriousness of our vulnerability.
General Keith Alexander (ret), and former Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) said “The greatest risk is a catastrophic attack on the energy infrastructure. We are not prepared for that.” This is echoed by John Everett, Program Manager for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) when he stated “If a well coordinated cyber attack were to occur today, the time it would take to restore power would pose daunting national security challenges.” Folks, I believe that when we hear such high ranking, “in the know” persons making such statements, we need to be prepared.
